In the classroom, standing before the students on Tuesday, June 9, was not a teacher but a police officer. Two of them, in fact.
Each in a different classroom at the Gustavia school complex, Chief Warrant Officer Moulay and Warrant Officer Didier—present as part of their duties with the Family Protection Center in Saint Martin—are conducting an awareness campaign for the students. Chief Warrant Officer Moulay discusses all issues related to internet use with the fifth-graders, while Warrant Officer Didier offers a pedestrian safety course to the third-graders.
For the former, the goal is to inform students about the dangers they face when they go online, particularly during online chats or games. “Behind a chat or a game,” explains the officer, “there could be a trap. When you receive an invitation from someone you don’t know, you should put it on hold and talk to your parents. You should always know who you’re playing with and who you’re chatting with.” ” The students already have some understanding of the dangers of online activity. Nevertheless, questions come flying at him. Often naive, but direct. And the chief warrant officer takes the time to provide precise answers.
For the pedestrian safety course with the younger children, Sergeant Didier doesn’t face the same questions. In fact, the short quiz given to the students is quickly and successfully completed. Afterward, he has to explain more about his work routine, the gendarmerie’s activities, and the equipment. “In Saint-Barth, you can tell the children are responsive and engaged,” notes Sergeant Didier.
