Saint-Barth - sénat Palais du Luxembourg

Senate elections on September 27

The date of the Senate elections was announced via a decree dated April 21 and published in the Official Journal. In Saint-Barthélemy, as in 178 of the 348 districts covered by the election, the vote will take place on Sunday, September 27. Candidates may submit their applications from Monday, September 7, through Friday, September 11. As a reminder, senators are elected by “electoral college members.” In this case, in Saint Barthélemy, these are parliamentary and territorial elected officials. The term of office is six years, and approximately half of the Senate is renewed every three years. In the overseas territories, French Guiana, the Wallis and Futuna Islands, Saint Martin, French Polynesia, and Saint Barthélemy are involved.
In Saint Barthélemy, the election may be decided in two rounds. In 2020, as the sole candidate, Micheline Jacques was elected unanimously in the first round (12 valid votes, 5 blank ballots, 2 invalid votes, and 2 abstentions). She succeeded Michel Magras (Saint Barth’s senator from 2008 to 2020). The incumbent senator makes no secret of her intention to seek another term. Well-established in her role as chair of the Senate’s Overseas Delegation, she now benefits from a political network to rely on in Paris. However, other names of potential candidates have been circulating in Saint Barthélemy for several months. One such name is Pierre-Marie Majorel, the former president of the Economic, Social, Cultural, and Environmental Council (CESCE) of Saint Barth. Should she lose her seat, Micheline Jacques would consider running in the territorial elections in March 2027.
