August 1, Overshoot Day

This Thursday, August 1, marks Overshoot Day, the date in the year calculated by the NGO Global Footprint Network, when humanity has consumed all the natural resources the planet is capable of producing in a single year to regenerate its consumption or absorb the waste it produces.humanity has consumed all the natural resources that the planet is capable of producing in one year to regenerate its consumption or absorb its waste.
In 2024, therefore, the Day of Exceeding occurs five months before the end of the year, and one day earlier than in 2023. For the first time in decades, outside the Covid period, this year marks a slight decline. In 1970, Overshoot Day fell on December 29.
This August 1st is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the planet's limits, especially as the counter does not start at zero on every January 1st, and these tensions accumulate year after year. The situation calls for a general awareness that must involve all our societies: from the economic fabric to the leaders of the great powers. Each and every one of us, as citizens, can limit the exploitation of natural resources, by rationalizing our energy and water consumption, reducing waste and giving objects a second life.
Sylvain Waserman, Chairman and CEO of Ademe, comments: "Every year, Overshoot Day reminds us of our collective responsibility to move our lifestyles and consumption patterns towards greater sobriety. We all have the means to take action, whether by favoring short distribution channels, eating seasonal fruit and vegetables, or buying reconditioned or second-hand products. More than ever, ADEME is supporting local authorities, businesses and associations in their efforts to reduce consumption. "
