The winners have been known since July. But the awards ceremony could not be held, as it is every year, a few days after the competition. As a result, on Thursday, October 15, the island’s schoolchildren who participated in the Micheline Jacques reading contest received their awards.
Gathered at the territorial library, in the presence of their parents, the students received their trophies and a few gifts (beautiful books and writing supplies) from the vice-rector of the academy, Nicole Noilhetas, who encouraged them to nurture their love of reading. Francius Matignon, vice president in charge of educational affairs for the Territorial Collectivity, also offered words of congratulations and encouragement to the children.
Among the winners, the happiest was undoubtedly Lilou Lagarrigues Grévin, winner of the grand prize for reading, across all schools. The 9-year-old, now in fourth grade at the Gustavia school complex, says, “I read every night. I really like comic books and adventure stories with mysteries.” Reading in front of a jury is obviously a very different experience from reading a story in bed at night. “I was a little nervous at first—I didn’t think I was going to win,” Lilou smiles. Everyone did a great job.” Her proud mother stands by her side, surprised to find a beautiful, large-format copy of Jean de La Fontaine’s fables in the goody bag. It’s sure to provide plenty of reading material for little Lilou’s long evenings.
