Gabriele Fioni, the new rector, starts his new school year in Saint-Barth

Wearing a dark suit and light mauve tie, Gabriele Fioni started the new school year in Saint-Barthélemy on Thursday September 11. The new rector of the Guadeloupe academic region came to meet staff at the Collège Mireille Choisy and the Gustavia school group, as well as students. Accompanied by Murielle Col-Minne, Deputy Academic Director, Vice-Rector Harry Christophe and Inspectrice d'académie Fanny Giausseran, Gabriele Fioni got to know the island's teaching teams and infrastructure. On his arrival, he also met with the President of the Collectivité territoriale, Xavier Lédée.

The arrival of the new rector coincided with the signing of contracts for the two teachers needed to complete the school group's teaching staff. I'm delighted to be able to come to Saint-Barthélemy," said the Rector. We're in an exceptional environment in terms of results. We sometimes have difficulty assigning teachers, due to housing constraints and the cost of living, but all classes have been able to take place. "
Welcomed to the school by Principal David Desiage, Gabriele Fioni handed out diplomas to apprentices from the CFA (apprentice training center) and to students who passed their "brevet des collèges" last July. The Rector took the opportunity to make a few jokes: "Everyone here tries to go to Toulouse, but never to Lille - it's strange! "After an exchange with parents, a musical meeting in the school courtyard and a tour of the premises ("The material conditions are very good, and I would like to thank the parents as well as the Collectivité for their support.I'd like to thank the parents and the Collectivité for their support", underlined Principal David Desiage), Gabriele Fioni attended a history-geography lesson in a bilingual class before heading off to the school.

The rector couldn't resist standing in front of the blackboard of a CE2 class in the Gustavia school group, for a short lesson.

"What's a rector? "
The visit kicked off with a meeting to discuss the pre-start of the school year (JSB 1629 and 1630). The rectorate delegation was then invited into classrooms by the headmistress, Agnès Combin. The rector was able to take in the energy of the pupils and teachers. In English, despite the end of the bilingual system, in French, but also in the language of mathematics. Gabriele Fioni, a doctor of science and former deputy director of the CEA (Commissariat à l'énergie atomique) Tech and director of the physical sciences department, couldn't resist standing in front of the blackboard of a CE2 class. "How many hundreds in 3,800? "he asked the curious and enthusiastic pupils. The short lesson is followed by refreshing exchanges that only children know the secret of. "What's a rector? "asks a little girl. I don't know," replies an amused Gabriele Fioni. Oh yes, we make sure you have teachers! "And he advises, with serious benevolence: "Above all, listen carefully to your teacher, learn lots of things, so that afterwards you can do whatever you want. "

"A role of listening and advising
A few minutes later, sitting in a classroom over a glass of fresh water, Gabriele Fioni talks about the importance of his visit to Saint-Barth. For me, it's essential to see what's happening on the ground," he says. My role is to represent the Minister and the Ministry of Education, but what people forget is that I also play a listening and advisory role. So that our teachers can carry out their duties in the best possible conditions. To do that, you have to meet people with a realistic vision. It's enriching, as are the exchanges with the children, which enhance the essence of my mission. If my being has always been turned towards the world of research and innovation, which is where I come from, by being here I hope to help these young people become enlightened men and women. "
The following day, in Saint-Martin, Gabriele Fioni visited Moho's "900" and "Roche Gravée" secondary schools in the Orleans district.
