The Member of Parliament for Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin, Frantz Gumbs, and the Senator for Saint-Martin, Annick Pétrus, have co-signed a press release protesting the government's announcement to cut 89 teaching posts in the Guadeloupe academy. "This decision will inevitably have consequences for Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy, territories already facing recurring difficulties in terms of teacher shortages and uninsured replacements", write the parliamentarians, who add: "It is, moreover, totally incompatible with any ambition to improve school results in this academy, and particularly in Saint-Martin. Furthermore, it would appear essential to review the calculation methods that led to these job cuts. Purely demographic reasoning will not suffice: the territorial context, the specific needs of pupils, and in particular the high proportion of pupils with severe educational difficulties in Saint-Martin, must be integrated into the criteria for allocating human resources. Otherwise, it is the most vulnerable pupils who will continue to pay the price of an ill-adapted accounting logic. "For the time being, Senator Micheline Jacques has not commented on this issue.
