Leaning over the photographs pinned to large boards, visitors try to recognize the children in the class photos. Some photos have yellowed with age, while others are still vibrant. On this Saturday, April 25, the Sainte-Marie School in Colombier is celebrating its 100th anniversary. And many island residents, most of them former students, have come to join the celebration.
“I found myself,” smiles a man in his forties, happy to discover a trace of his past. “I can’t figure out what year it was,” murmurs a woman. As the afternoon draws to a close, there are many visitors. And while the adults chat, the children run around everywhere. It must be said that the evening’s program is appealing. Between the photography exhibition, the performances by the students and the Gongonnes, the testimonials from the elders, and the concerts by Ti Lina and Les Romantiques, there is plenty of entertainment. And everyone is happy to share a moment in this place steeped in history.
In the morning, the crowd was just as dense for Mass at the church in Colombier. The procession that followed led the faithful to the school. There, once again, they immersed themselves in the photographs. But also in the archives. Thanks to the participation of Arlette Magras and the Domaine Félicité, the first student register was on display in the schoolyard. For its 100th anniversary, Sainte-Marie School was treated to a wonderful day. Much to the delight of the entire community.
