Saint-Barth - Cuba St Barth Harmony

Cuban rhythms in harmony

In a classroom at Mireille Choisy Middle School, a percussionist and a singer stand facing the students. Together, they invite the students to join in and sing the song “Cuba linda.” The teenagers’ enthusiasm is somewhat limited, but some get swept up in the moment. This is a first glimpse of the “Saint-Barth Harmony Invites Cuba” event organized by the Saint-Barth Harmony music school, located in the Alcide Terrac building in Colombier.

The musical event titled “Saint-Barth Harmony Invites Cuba” began on Monday, May 11, with a performance at Mireille Choisy Middle School.

From Monday, May 11, through Saturday, May 16, events are being offered not only to the island’s musicians but also, and above all, to the general public—through workshops as well as concerts.
For Saint-Barth Harmony, the idea is to offer a different perspective on the Caribbean. Through the visiting musicians, who will strive to bring Cuba to life in Saint-Barth for a few days, showcasing the country’s culture.
Following performances at the middle school and elementary school in Gustavia, another event will take place this Wednesday, May 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Colombier Music School. Featuring artist Lazaro Bandera and the drummers of Saint-Barth Harmony.
Tomorrow, Thursday, as well as Friday, a Cuban music workshop will be offered at the music school (9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for children, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. for adults). The workshop will feature Yalessa Montalvo on vocals, Lazaro Bandera on percussion, and Didier Prossaird as musical director.
Also this Friday, May 15, at the Colombier Music School, the film “Lazaro and The Shark” will be screened at 8 p.m., with director William Sabourin O’Reilly in attendance.
On Saturday, several events are on the program. The first will be another workshop at the music school, this time on Afro-Cuban percussion with Lazaro Bandera. From 9 to 10 a.m. for children and from 10 a.m. to noon for adults.
A masterclass featuring the group Idilio Combo, Antonio Orta from Puerto Rico, Wilky Souklaye from Sint Maarten, Antoine Grandemange, and Julien Séguret will be held from 2 to 5 p.m.
In the evening, starting at 7 p.m., a Cuban salsa concert by the group Idilio Combo will take place on the waterfront. The event will feature a performance by the student trainees of Saint-Barth Harmony, who will have the opportunity to showcase the fruits of their training.
