The 82nd General Assembly of the French Red Cross was held in Paris on June 20–21. Éric Djamakorzian, president of the association’s territorial delegation in Saint Barthélemy, and Michèle Vaillot, the secretary, took part in the event. After three days of “intense work,” as Éric Djamakorzian noted, the two representatives from Saint-Barthélemy signed a governance agreement with the national president of the Red Cross, Dr. Caroline Cross. “We assessed our needs in the territory, identifying those that are poorly addressed or not met at all,” explains the president. “We presented our action plan. This governance agreement aims to consolidate the identified territorial objectives by securing resources from headquarters.”
The plan outlined in the agreement is to continue existing initiatives, phase out others, and create new ones—all while maintaining the same priority: continuing to attract new volunteers to the Saint-Barth delegation. The expansion of the Gustavia facilities, funded by the Territorial Collectivity, will improve services for those in need. “We’re seeing the emergence of precarious workers, even if they aren’t numerous,” notes Éric Djamakorzian. These are parents who work but, due to high rent prices, cannot afford housing or spend three-quarters of their income on rent.
For the coming season, the Red Cross and its volunteers will therefore continue to be indispensable in Saint Barthélemy.
