The big treasure hunt titled “The Secret of the Trade Winds” inspired the members of the Youth Territorial Council’s Culture, Sports, and Community Life Committee. But since “the treasure hunt was for older kids and really tough,” the four young council members came up with the idea of organizing one for their peers on the island. Inès Soubthan (11), Noémie Gréaux Bourgeois (12), Marley Poujol, and Elliot Roblin (10) thus devised, with the help of their advisor Bettina Cointre, a challenge tailored specifically for elementary and middle school students. This was done in collaboration with the Journal de Saint-Barth.
“The treasure hunt will consist of riddles that we’ll publish in the newspaper,” explains Marley. “You’ll have to look for the words (which will be underlined) that form a sentence or a riddle to find the location of the clue.” The concept is simple. Starting next week (issue 1657 of the JSB on Thursday, March 19) and for five weeks, highlighted words will appear in certain articles in the newspaper. Participants in the treasure hunt will have to find them, write them down, and form a sentence. This sentence will constitute a riddle, the solution to which will point to an easily accessible location on the island where a clue will be hidden. Again, this clue will be a word. Once discovered, it must be emailed to the Collectivité. All the hidden words will in turn form a riddle which, when solved, will allow participants to set out in search of the treasure, which will undoubtedly be worth the effort expended by the hunters during their quest.
