Earlier this week, a new development along the seaside street in Gustavia took residents, workers, and visitors by surprise. Nearly a dozen parking spaces reserved for cars were removed and replaced with concrete posts. Both on site and on social media, many residents and locals expressed their surprise and dissatisfaction. In particular, they complained about not having been warned of such a change. "It's already difficult to park in Gustavia, and now it's going to be even more complicated," commented Michael online, while Enzo quipped: "It's true that we had too many spaces in Gustavia..." Manoël adds: "People were complaining about not having anywhere to park, so the shuttle bus was created to alleviate this lack of space, and now they're removing parking spaces. It's impossible to understand." But to understand, precisely and beyond the countless expressions of incomprehension found online, we need to look at a decree signed by the president of the territorial council, Xavier Lédée, on December 15, 2025.
The document concerns "temporary traffic regulations on the seafront road in Gustavia for work on plot AL 427, WNL construction site." The president's decree responds to a request made on March 22, 2025, by the company Plasse Bâtiments. "A portion of the road, measuring 51m2, is being occupied by the company for the purposes of the construction site," the document states. It also specifies that "four-wheeled vehicles are prohibited from parking on the section of the street opposite the construction site" and that "parking spaces for two-wheeled vehicles will be created between the new roadway and the planter on the edge of the quay." Article 1 of the order stipulates that the new measures will be effective from January 15 to September 30.
