This is a serious issue, often considered taboo, and unfortunately still very much a reality today. This is particularly true in Saint-Barthélemy, which has not been spared from cases of sexual violence involving both adults and minors. One such case, for example, is still awaiting trial more than six years after the investigation began. This Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Gustavia Harbor Master’s Office, a conference and discussion will be held on the theme: “Breaking the Silence on Incest and Violence.”
In the presence of the First Vice President of the Territorial Collectivity, Marie-Hélène Bernier, several elected officials and professionals will participate in the event. Maud Petit, Member of Parliament for Val-de-Marne and chair of the National Assembly’s commission of inquiry on incest, will speak via video conference from Paris. Ségolène Pasquier, president of the Basse-Terre Judicial Court, will take part in the discussion, as will Members of Parliament Frantz Gumbs (Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy) and Christian Baptiste (Guadeloupe, rapporteur for the National Assembly’s commission of inquiry on incest), Olivier Fatou of France Victimes, and Surya Petit, a specialized attorney.
The goal of the conference and debate is to raise awareness about incestuous violence and its consequences, encourage victims to speak out, and provide information on prevention, support, and protection measures.
The event is open to the public and runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
