March 8: Celebrating Women

Whether in the Ajoe dance studio for “Women’s Day Dance,” on the stage of the Théâtre du Paradis, or on the promenade in front of the Collectivité hotel, the island’s women had several spaces to express themselves on Sunday, March 8, in observance of International Women’s Day.

“I see smiles on faces that weren’t there at the start of the sessions.” Dance instructor Anaïs Cannamela is delighted. On Sunday, March 8, as her high-heel dance class wraps up at the Ajoe hall in Lorient, she feels the positive energy radiating from her students. A feeling shared by all the facilitators of “Women’s Day Dance,” the event conceived and organized by Ajoe president Cécile Coudreau to mark International Women’s Day. But dance wasn’t the only outlet for expression that day.

At the Théâtre du Paradis, readings were held featuring texts highlighting the situation of women around the world.

On the stage of the Théâtre du Paradis, the SB Artists association and the Territorial Collectivity presented an evening of singing, readings, performances, and testimonials that drew a large audience. In fact, not a single seat was left empty when the performance began.
Additionally, on the pier of the Territorial Collectivity’s hotel, the pianist and sailor took advantage of a lull in the weather to give her second concert (page 9). Once again, it was through the arts that women were celebrated in Saint Barthélemy. As for the territorial collectivity, it gave a voice to four women from the island on its Facebook page: Céline Zitte Questel, Nicole Gréaux, Ginette Rio, and Nadège Emmanuelian.

As the event’s organizer, Ajoe President Cécile Coudreau shared her energy with the participants.

For Cécile Coudreau, president of Ajoe, the success of the “Women’s Day Dance” is an invitation to organize other events for women throughout the year. “Art and sports can make you strong,” she says. “Women’s lives aren’t always easy. I know some of the women who came on March 8, and I was very happy they were there because life can be tough, and they had this little moment to catch their breath before returning to their lives, which aren’t always easy.” ” More events like this could therefore take place later in the year. To offer women a space to breathe and express themselves—something some of them are deprived of in their daily lives.

Four radiant “teachers.”
