Sailing - A mixed end to the season for Lorenzo Mayer

To round off his season, Lorenzo Mayer was hoping to shine at the European Senior Championship in Sweden. Unfortunately, due to a less-than-usual state of health, the young sailor was unable to deliver the expected performance. Nevertheless, from August 9 to 16 in Marstrand, Lorenzo Mayer wasn't content just to make up the numbers.
Of the 153 Ilca boats entered in the competition, the Saint-Barth climbed to 47th place. Better still, he came 39th among the Europeans (as competitors from outside Europe were also taking part) and finished 11th in the under-23 category. Not bad for a sailor who admits he "arrived sick" in Sweden. The training days were a bit difficult," confides Lorenzo. I wasn't able to be in top form, despite a superb qualification for the gold group. In the final, I made too many mistakes that cost me points. "
As usual, Lorenzo Mayer doesn't shy away from self-criticism. A little harshly, no doubt. But such is the temperament of top-level competitors. We need these competitions to question ourselves," assures the young man. Regattas where you think you're going to make it and then you don't, give you the motivation to bounce back. "
Although the season is over and Lorenzo is now enjoying a few weeks' vacation, his mind is already on the "National". A competition due to take place at the end of October, beginning of November, which will set the tone for a decisive 2026 season. It will be quite decisive in terms of the National Committee's view on selection for the 2028 Olympic Games," recalls Lorenzo. It's going to be even more intense than what we've experienced. "A few days' vacation in Saint-Barthélemy, "to recharge my batteries for the coming season", says Lorenzo, won't be in vain.
