Anaïs Blanchard and Célia Magras for the girls, Louka Giraud, Preston Gréaux and Kalani Giraud for the boys. Such is the composition of the delegation of young surfers who will represent Saint-Barthélemy this weekend from April 18 to 21 in Biarritz, on the Basque coast, for the 39th edition of the Maider Arosteguy.
More than 200 surfers from all over the world will be taking part in the competition, which is a true surfing extravaganza every year. From up-and-coming talents to the world's top surfers, almost everyone will be gathered on the Basque coast from April 18 to 21. Over and above the prestige of the event, Europe's oldest, the organizers have managed to raise the level of prize money for the winners, equally divided between men and women at 10,000 euros each.
For the five young representatives from Saint-Barth, it's all about taking part in an event that has become legendary on the circuit. A competition that brings together categories from cadets to the Open table.
The event is named after an emblematic figure in the town of Biarritz, Maider Arosteguy, who offered his unwavering support to the first surfing competitions organized on the town's main beach in the early 1980s. An amusing detail: the current mayor of Biarritz is none other than the aunt of this deceased personality, and she bears the same name.
