This weekend, Brazil hosts a leg of the World Surfing League's Challenger Series circuit. The competition starts this Saturday, October 11, and runs until October 19, at Saquarema. The Rio de Janeiro event is a favorite of Tessa Thyssen, who has put in some fine performances. In the midst of a most complicated season, marked by early eliminations and disappointments, the Ajoe Reefer Surf Club licensee could rediscover the joy of success on waves she loves.
In 2024, Tessa Thyssen finished 13th in the Challenger Series. The Caribbean's top surfer was hoping to climb even higher in 2025. Unfortunately, the path of a top sportswoman is sometimes strewn with pitfalls. Before the Saquarema CS, Tessa was in 25th place in a ranking where French and world surfing prodigy Tya Zebrowski, barely 14 years old, reigned supreme.
After the Portuguese leg of the CS, in Ericeira, Tessa Thyssen wrote on Instagram: "I would have loved to share more with you, but for now I'm trying to enjoy every moment despite this difficult season. I know I didn't reach my goal this year, but I'm keeping my head up and working on projects in the background. Life isn't a quiet river, it's full of ups and downs, hundreds of lessons, but I never stop learning. I remain grateful and always thank those who support me, my family, my friends and my team. "A fine performance in Brazil could give a fresh burst of enthusiasm to the Ajoe licensee and 2015 Junior World Champion. All the more so as, due to a lack of sponsors and funding, she may not be able to take part in the last two rounds of the season in Hawaii (January 28 to February 8) and Australia (March 8 to 15).
