Not everyone gets the chance to have a multiple French, European, and world champion as their “coach.” So when Anissa Meksen’s second visit to Saint-Barth was announced, many members of the island’s Muay Thai association rushed to reserve their spots for the week-long seminar led by the champion. “The vibe was good last year, so we figured we could make it a regular thing, and it all just fell into place naturally,” Anissa smiles. Behind her, in the boxing and martial arts area of the Saint-Jean dojo, the trainees are warming up. Several dozen of them participated in the champion’s sessions on March 30, then on April 1 and 3. “I focus a lot on technique,” explains Anissa. “Especially my favorite techniques. Each time, we review everything through sparring. The skill levels are very mixed. There are even beginners—girls who started with me on Monday. It’s great. A wonderful experience for everyone.”
By her own admission, Anissa Meksen is “nearing the end” of her career. “I don’t know if I want to box again or not,” she says. “It’s a question I’m asking myself right now; we’ll see.” In the meantime, she shares her experience with fellow boxers, whether seasoned or new to the sport. With the same passion.
