It seems a long time ago that, at the age of 6 in the Ajoe soccer section, little Sana Boubakeur was kicking her first balls around on the artificial turf of the Saint-Jean stadium. Now, the player is playing at the highest level. In this case, she plays for AS Saint-Priest in the under-18 regional 1 championship. With the energy of her sixteen years, Sana regulates the midfield of a team that has just qualified for the round of 32 of the Coupe Gambardella (Nike Women's Cup). On December 14, she and her teammates will face FC Rousset Sainte-Victoire (Group B, round of 32).
Having moved to France to join a demanding sports-study program, Sana confirms season after season the qualities she discovered at Ajoe. In 2022, these qualities earned her a spot on the Guadeloupe League's under-14 detection course, and she was then selected for the inter-league championships in Martinique. Today, she follows a rigorous training program with daily training sessions, a match every weekend and a life of sport-study in a boarding school.
Hard-working, determined and ambitious, Sana Boubakeur represents one of the great promises of women's soccer in the French overseas territories. Her career shows that passion and commitment can open doors, even when you come from a small island.
An island she'll be returning to for the festive season, to spend a few days with her family. No doubt she'll be making forays back to the stadium where she started out, in Saint-Jean, to maintain her training rhythm. There's no room for complacency in the race to the top.
