It has been a long time since a full women’s team from Saint Barthélemy has represented the island on a soccer field. On Saturday, June 20, the island’s women soccer players’ long absence will come to an end. This is thanks to the support of the Territorial Olympic and Sports Committee (CTOS), which helped organize a friendly match against a women’s team from Saint Martin. The match will take place at 4 p.m. on the field at Jean-Louis Vanterpool Stadium in Marigot.
For Sylvie Brin and all the players from Saint Barthélemy, this is a major event. For the past few months, a handful of passionate women have been working to revive the sport on the island (JSB 1662). The first goal was to attract more female players. As Sylvie Brin recalls, during a recent trip to Saint Martin to compete in a tournament, Saint Barthélemy had only seven players. It was only thanks to the “loan” of a few soccer players from the neighboring island that they were able to participate in the competition. Since then, the situation has improved significantly. “On Saturday, we’ll be heading out with fourteen players and two coaches,” says a delighted Sylvie Brin. “I really want to thank all the girls who signed up.”
Ahead of this highly anticipated event—due to the closure of the Saint-Jean stadium until September 25—the team is training at the “City Park” in Flamands. This space was adequate when they were short on players, but it’s now proving a bit cramped. It doesn’t matter to them, though. Clad in their red jerseys with white sleeves, the players are driven by their desire for fun and competition.
This Saturday, June 20, they won’t be the only representatives of Saint Barthélemy in Saint Martin, as the Cup winner and runner-up, FC Diables Rouges, will also play a friendly match against the Saint-Louis team at 6:30 p.m.
