The atmosphere in the stands is electric. The Fouquets (Carl Gustaf) team has just won the third edition of the inter-hotel soccer tournament, dethroning Eden Rock, the winner of the first two tournaments. Organized by the soccer section of Ajoe, the event drew a large crowd on Saturday, March 21, at the Saint-Jean Stadium. The goal: to raise funds to help finance the Saint-Barth Foot Challenge, the international tournament for players under 13 that will take place on May 23 and 24 in Saint-Barth.
“This evening was a great success both in terms of sportsmanship and enthusiasm,” says Alan Dagorn, coach and head of the Ajoe soccer section. “Despite the short duration of the matches (only eight minutes in the group stage and ten in the final round, ed.), the quality of play was good and at times intense,” he says. “I think this third edition was the best of the three.” Seventeen teams representing nine hotels on the island participated in the tournament.
In addition, the coach notes that the amount of funds raised during the inter-hotel tournament is “slightly higher than last year’s.” More good news, then. Because on May 23 and 24, Saint-Barth will host seven teams for the Foot Challenge. Seven teams composed of players under the age of 13 will come from Canada (Edmonton), Italy (Como), Portugal (Vittoria Guimaraes, the defending champion), France (FC Lorient), Guadeloupe (Académie Soccer Plus), Martinique (Under-13 Selection), and Saint Martin. Another major club is expected to join the already impressive list of guests, Alan Dagorn notes.
