Soccer - Looking for players to rebuild a women's team

While the women’s rugby team (Les Rascasses) seems to have firmly established itself in Saint-Barthélemy’s sports scene, their soccer counterparts have been struggling surprisingly for several years. This is mainly due to a lack of players. Fortunately, a few passionate women have decided to get the “machine” back up and running. Sylvie Brin, Shana Brin, and Aloïs Duteil are now on the hunt for soccer enthusiasts to form a new team. “Women’s soccer is growing on the other islands,” notes Sylvie. “Three or four years ago, there were about twenty of us; we had a good team and we used to go to Anguilla, for example.” ” Recently, seven of them traveled to Saint Martin to take part in the Women’s Challenge. “We were loaned players to make a full team,” explains Sylvie, clearly unhappy that she couldn’t field a 100% Saint Barth team.
Recruitment is open to all girls and women aged 15 and older. There are no skill requirements, and the only cost involved is the license fee. “The local government has given us time slots at the stadium—Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. and Fridays at 6:00 p.m.—for physical training,” Sylvie explains. “At first, it will be all about training. And then we’ll be able to travel to the other islands to play matches.” With an ambitious goal: to compete in the 2027 Women’s Challenge, which will take place in French Guiana. “We already have a sponsor,” Sylvie adds.
Another project is underway: developing “indoor soccer.” Sylvie smiles: “Well, there’s no indoor facility on the island, but Ajoe would be willing to lend us their court (in Lorient) to play on.”
The next step for the established players will be to participate in the tournament on Friday, May 1, organized in Saint-Jean by the regional soccer committee. “Boys and girls will be mixed,” emphasizes Sylvie Brin. An opportunity for potential candidates to come and observe their future teammates.
