Barely bigger than their suitcases, a few children approach the Tradewind Airlines counter. Leading the way is their teacher, Thomas Rebut, who is about to check in some of his students. It is just past 10 a.m. on Monday, May 11, at the Saint-Barthélemy airport, and for sixteen fourth-grade students from Saint-Joseph School in Lorient, a big trip lies ahead. Indeed, they are all set to fly to the U.S. capital, Washington, D.C., for a school trip lasting—almost—five days. After a short stopover in Puerto Rico.
Between hugs with her mom, 10-year-old Rose admits she’s “a little stressed.” But the girl assures us: “I’m going to really enjoy it! We’re going to see so many things. ” Indeed, the itinerary promises to be as packed as it is exciting for the Saint-Joseph delegation. Needless to say, the sixteen children are traveling with adult chaperones. Thomas Rebut, Isabelle Dussart, Kathy Brin, and Miguel Berry are also joining the trip.
“We’re going to visit museums,” explains Thomas Rebut. “Just like in London, they’re free. We’ll also go to the parks, explore historic monuments, Arlington National Cemetery (a national military cemetery established during the Civil War on the grounds of a former property belonging to General Lee, commander of the Confederate armies), and we’ll also have a guided tour of the Capitol.” Not to mention the White House, of course.
While 9-year-old Gabin seems relaxed, 10-year-old Lucas, standing beside him, admits he’s a little more anxious. It’s not easy traveling for the first time without your parents! That said, Lucas’s curiosity gets the better of him. “I want to see everything,” he says shyly. More outspoken at 11, Jarod exclaims, “It’s still awesome! I want to see everything. The White House, the museums, even the hotel!” It’s hard to be more enthusiastic.
They’re scheduled to return this Saturday, May 16.
