Aging in Saint-Barth: A Morning to Learn About Support Services

How can you enjoy your golden years in the best possible way in Saint Barthélemy? The Irénée de Bruyn Hospital aims to provide all the answers to this question during a morning event on Saturday, June 6, in the “La Capricieuse” room at the Gustavia Harbor Master’s Office.
Starting at 9:30 a.m., anyone interested in learning about aging well in Saint Barth—including all the support services available on the island—is invited to attend this morning of meetings and discussions. Several speakers will be present for the event: the Territorial Collectivity’s social services will be represented, as will the CPS (Health Insurance Fund), the Bettany Home territorial resource and respite center in Saint Martin, the SSIAD (Home Nursing Services), the SSAD (Home Care and Assistance Services), as well as the Louis Vialenc nursing home. Notably, there will be presentations by geriatricians. In addition, the guardianship judge will also be present.
“The goal is to provide as much information as possible about existing resources,” emphasize Alexandra Bernier and Julie Souied on behalf of the management of the Irénée de Bruyn Hospital. “The nursing home is the last resort,” they remind us. “There are many other options. ” Medical-geriatric care, home care, residential care, legal matters, assistance, and legal protection—these are just some of the topics that will be discussed with industry professionals throughout the morning.
In addition to the various presentations, documents will be made available to the public. “This event is aimed at the entire population, not just those directly affected,” emphasizes Alexandra Bernier. “This morning is intended to address questions and challenges. Not only regarding available services but also regarding rights, particularly concerning health insurance, as there is a great deal of misunderstanding. Some people pay for private insurance when they are actually eligible for assistance.”
To learn more, the event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, starting at 9:30 a.m., at the Gustavia Harbor Master’s Office.
