Manuel Valls appointed Minister for Overseas France

Ten days after his appointment as Prime Minister, François Bayrou has succeeded in forming a government. This was announced on Monday December 23 by theElysée's Secretary General, Alexis Kohler . Among the list of men and womenwho have been entrusted with a ministry are a few well-known names, including that of the man who will take over from François-Noël Buffet in the rue Oudinot offices, where the Ministry of Overseas France is located in Paris. It's Manuel Valls.

Born in Barcelona on August 13, 1962, he joined the Young Socialists movement in 1980, at the age of 17, to support Michel Rocard, who was hoping to take over the leadership of the Socialist Party from François Mitterrand. His political career then took him to the Ile-de-France regional council (1986-1992) and vice-presidency (1998-2002). In 2001, he was elected mayor of Évry, a position he held until 2012, when he was elected deputy for the first constituency of Essonne.Essonne from 2002 to 2012, as well as Chairman of the Évry-Centre-Essonne urban community from 2008 to 2012.

He was then appointed to government positions during François Hollande's five-year term (2012 to 2017). Minister of the Interior from May 16, 2012 to March 31, 2014, he became Prime Minister until the end of 2016, when he resigned.

He then stood as a candidate in the 2017 Left-wing primaries, losing to Benoît Hamon in this socialist primary. For the 2017 presidential campaign, Manuel Valls supports Emmanuel Macron's candidacy.

The former prime minister then decides to run for mayor of Barcelona in 2019, without success. He returned to France and, in 2022, ran in the legislative elections under the LREM banner in the fifth constituency of the French abroad, which covers Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Monaco. Another failure.

When he was Prime Minister, Manuel Valls had to deal with the New Caledonia issue. In 2017, he drafted 35 proposals to "breathe new life into the French overseas territories".

Manuel Valls succeeds François-Noël Buffet. Since 2022 and the start of Emmanuel Macron's second term as President of the Republic, no fewer than seven different personalities have held the post of Minister for Overseas France. Yaël Braun-Pivet, Elisabeth Borne (Prime Minister who was also in charge of Overseas France for a period), then under Gérald Darmanin and the Ministry of theJean-François Carenco, Philippe Vigier and Marie Guévenoux, who handed over to François-Noël Buffet last September.
