Commemoration of the abolition of slavery cancelled

On October 9, 1847, Sweden freed its last slaves on Saint-Barthélemy. This Thursday at 5pm, a ceremony to commemorate the abolition of slavery was due to take place under the Gustavia lighthouse, next to the cheese tree on which a commemorative plaque was affixed in 2023. However, due to weather disturbances forecast for tomorrow and, no doubt, Friday, linked to the passage of stormthe event has been cancelled by the President of the Collectivité.
For the record, the island of Saint-Barthélemy was a Swedish possession from 1784 to 1878. According to several sources on the demographic structure of Saint-Barth in 1846, Sweden counted 2,630 inhabitants on the island at the time, including 1,308 "whites", 788 "free men of color" and 534 slaves.
