Storm Jerry - Princess Juliana airport closed, heavy rain forecast for evening

The management of Sint Maarten's international airport, Princess Juliana, suspended operations for the day of October 10 at 1pm. "The airport is expected to reopen and resume normal operations tomorrow, Saturday, October 11, weather permitting," it said in a statement. which advises passengers to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight updates, booking options and travel information.

"Showers are becoming more consistent and thundery this afternoon, becoming more frequent and longer lasting over the course of the day," writes météo France in its latest bulletin. The heaviest rains are expected at the end of the day and into the evening. "Cumulative rainfall totals of 100 to 150 mm between Friday morning and Saturday morning are envisaged, most of which could fall in just a few hours," warns Météo France, adding, "A marked improvement is expected from Saturday morning onwards."

As for the swell, Météo France writes: "The wind, which is veering south then south as it strengthens, is raising waves and generating unusual agitation on the southwest coast of St. Barthélémy, particularly in the Gustavia roadstead. Boat moorings are under heavy strain. This short southerly swell subsides on Friday night.
