Following the latest meteorological information issued today by Météo France, the Gustavia Port Authority wishes to inform all owners, captains and managers of boats currently moored in the port area that, with the probable passage of hurricane Jerry in the vicinity of Saint-Barthélemy tomorrow, Thursdays in the port area that with the probable passage of cyclonic phenomenon Jerry close to Saint-Barthélemy from tomorrow, Thursday October 9, a change in wind direction and strength is expected, as well as a deterioration in sea conditions.
Port management would like to point out that "cyclonic phenomena are unpredictable and can strengthen in a matter of hours". Consequently, all users are asked to check their moorings and take all necessary steps to shelter their boats.
Reminder of article 8.5 of the port's police regulations:
- As soon as the meteorological services announce the arrival of strong (or sustained) winds of 80 km/h or more, from any direction, or ofa heavy swell of more than 3 meters, from the North-East to the South, passing through the West, the moorings (moorings, chains, buoys) belonging to the community are formally forbidden to use.
- From the "Yellow Vigilance" phase (possible danger for more than 36 hours), users who own or care for ships or any other vessel located in or on the public port domain, and who are unable to on the island of Saint-Barthélemy, must have these ships or other vessels leave the Port of Gustavia in order to find shelter.
Failure to comply with this article will result in owners or captains being held legally and civilly liable for any damage caused to third parties, or to the community's port infrastructure.
Port users are also advised to check their insurance policies. "The Irma experience in 2017 having revealed that many policies did not adequately protect policyholders, and that recognition of the state of natural disaster did not work for boats", explains Ernest brin, director of the port of Saint-Barthélemy.
