Tropical storm Jerry is currently around 200 km from our territories. Track models suggest that the system will pass within 140 km of the northern islands on Friday night.
If these assumptions are confirmed, Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin will not be subject to cyclonic conditions, but to two episodes of deteriorating weather conditions, says the prefecture in a press release. Starting this Thursday evening, with an initial rainy passage, intensifying winds and submersion waves of up to 3.50 m on the east coast. Then, on Friday night, rainfall totals of up to 100mm and wind gusts of up to 100km/h could be observed.
Furthermore, after consultation with the Vice-Rector, and in view of these elements, the Prefecture assures that no school closures are envisaged at this stage.
The islands of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin remain under multi-parameter yellow alert: heavy rain/storms, wave-submergence and winds. The level of vigilance may be increased depending on how the situation develops.
The prefecture invites the population to exercise the utmost caution and to limit travel as much as possible. We would also like to remind you of the following instructions:
- Take the necessary measures to shelter or moor your boats ;
- Store or secure objects exposed to the wind and likely to be projectiles ;
- Avoid unnecessary travel during this period of bad weather ;
- Do not plan any sea outings or hikes ;
- check your water and food supplies and top them up if necessary.
- stay tuned to Météo-France weather forecasts and local authorities' instructions ;
The Prefect of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin calls on everyone to be vigilant and responsible in the face of this evolving tropical phenomenon. He is monitoring the situation with particular attention and keeping all operational services on alert.
