Saint-Barth - Crash Air Antilles Helicoptere aout 2023

Air crash in Saint Barth in 2023: an investigation report due by January?

We'll have to wait a few more months. The report by the Bureau d'Enquêtes et d'Analyses pour la Sécurité de l'Aviation Civile (BEA) on the air accident at Rémy-de-Haenen airport in Saint Barth, on August 24, 2023 (JSB1530), could be delivered in December or January, according to airport director Fabrice Danet, contacted on November 3. "The investigation is not over, acts are still in progress", confirms for its part the BEA, also contacted by the Journal de Saint Barth.

At the end of October, the media outlet la 1ere published an article detailing the initial conclusions of a provisional BEA report. It stated that the BEA "has been able to determine with certainty" certain, rather technical, causes of the crash. "The BEA has not published a report, but has only sent a draft document to several stakeholders for consultation," the independent authority states.

A secret pre-report
We have received a pre-report for review," says Fabrice Danet. But it is confidential, and we will not comment on it until the official investigation report is published. "The BEA adds that the document, when published, will be available on its website and that an announcement will be made on social networks to inform the public.
For the record: it was around 11:40 on this day of Saint-Barthélemy 2023, when an Air Antilles Twin Otter began landing on the runway at Rémy-de-Haenen airport. The aircraft arrives not from the Tourmente traffic circle, but from the other end of the runway, towards Saint-Jean Bay. All goes well.
Until the landing gear came into contact with the tarmac. The pilot loses control of the aircraft. The Twin Otter veered to the left and collided with a parked West Indies helicopter, which was fortunately empty. The aircraft's left wing was torn off, and it came to an abrupt halt. Only one passenger suffered minor injuries. According to the JSB edition of the time (n°1530), initial findings pointed to a problem with the Twin Otter's steering system, which had misaligned its landing gear and caused it to veer off the runway centreline.
