In a press release issued shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday, January 31, the local authority stated that " due to a malfunction at the wastewater treatment plant (Step) , swimming and all water sports activities are strongly advised against at Grands Galets". at the wastewater treatment plant (Step), swimming and all water sports activities are strongly advised against at Grands Galets". This discharge was noticed and reported as early as Wednesday. Clearly, this latest discharge of wastewater from the Step into the sea is sufficiently worrying to warrant an alert to bathers and other water sports enthusiasts.

In its press release, the Collectivité specifies that "all necessary measures are being taken to identify the causes of this incident and to remedy it as quickly as possible".

Citizens regularly report discharges of matter emanating from the wastewater treatment plant located in Gustavia. Since 2018, the JSB has devoted several articles to the difficulties encountered by the Step due to the undersizing of the structure. The main reason for this is the ever-increasing amount of sludge coming from wastewater systems.
