Environnement - Hydrophones listen in on reef fauna

To further enhance its observations of the reef's fauna, theAgence territoriale de l'environnement, in partnership with the Reef Pulse company, has installed two hydrophones at different points on the reef surrounding the island. This equipment will record the sounds emitted by the reef fauna (fish, crustaceans, molluscs, marine mammals) as well as human activity on the site for one year. "We're talking about a soundscape," explains ATE. At the end of this period, the recordings will be sent to a partner company based on Reunion Island, specializing in the study of aquatic sounds. The information gathered will enable us to understand which species populate our reefs, and how often, in order to get an idea of the settlement of our reefs through several criteria. ATE cites daily dynamics, lunar cycles, seasonal trends and the identification of activity peaks. "All of this tells the story of the reef throughout the period being listened to," explains the Agency. What's more, the recordings, cleaned of unwanted noise, can then be replayed on reefs in poorer condition, to make them more attractive to wildlife and help them repopulate.

Connected buoys at Colombier
On September 19, ATE agents launched thirty connected mooring buoys in Colombier Bay. The operation was coordinated with the help of Nauticspot. The system provides real-time information on the number of moorings taken by a vessel, the time spent at anchor by vessel and overall for the year, as well as on the number of moorings unhooked. "This information will provide us with the information we need to better manage anchorages in this bay, which is a Nature Reserve", assures ATE, adding: "We remind you that these buoys serve to preserve the seabed, and their use is to be preferred to anchoring (which is only done in authorized areas). "The Agency invites anyone wishing to learn more about the regulations to consult its excellent website. A relay antenna has been installed on a plot of land in Colombier, thanks to the agreement of the owners.
