Sunday is clean-up day!

As they do every year at the start of the new tourist season, the Rotary Club and the Lions Club are joining forces to organize a "clean up" across the island. The clean-up operation will take place this Sunday, October 20, and is open to all kind-hearted souls.
Every year, the two clubs' joint operation collects several tons of garbage. From the most expected to the most surprising. The first category, for example, includes cigarette butts, metal cans, glass and plastic bottles, various types of packaging and so on. In the second, the surprises are numerous. They range from vehicle batteries and air conditioners to whole bags of garbage, tires and even washing machines. Last year, schoolchildren found the corpse of a cat in a bag, thrown into a morne. To sum up, the Rotary and Lions "Clean up" morning is unfortunately a matter of public interest. And reveals a crying lack of civic-mindedness on the part of part of the island's population.
For volunteers, the meeting point is set for 7 a.m. on Sunday at the large parking lot on Saint-Jean. "It's early, but it's for a good cause," says the Rotary Club, which invites everyone to form groups of friends or colleagues to join the collection teams. "We're offering the pain au chocolat and croissants, the gloves, the garbage can bags, and the chasuble," says Rotary, adding, not without a sense of humor: "It's a beautiful fluorescent vest that shows off your tanned complexion! But above all, it lets you be seen. "
At the end of the operation, participants will be invited to gather around a barbecue at the Yacht Club, on Public beach.
As every year, a number of the island's establishments will be taking part in this major clean-up. As will, no doubt, Mireille Choisy schoolchildren, sports clubs and associations. Every bit of help will be invaluable in ridding the island of the garbage carelessly left behind by pigs, big and small.
