Like every year, many campers took advantage of the Easter weekend to set up camp on the beaches of the Saint-Barth nature reserve. The Agence territoriale de l'environnement (ATE) carried out surveillance patrols at several sensitive sites, including Grand Cul-de-Sac, Petit Cul-de-Sac, Colombier, Anse Gascon, Petite Anse and Fourchue. A total of 16 rounds were carried out, divided between day and night. Although the majority of campers were cooperative and complied with preservation instructions, two infractions were noted: one for fishing in the reserve, the other for a fire on the ground, a strictly forbidden practice.
The ATE emphasizes that 11 campers were made aware of eco-responsible gestures, in particular respecting seaside vegetation, discretion on the beach so as not to disturb the fauna, or the importance of limiting the use of sun cream in favor of wearing lycra, which is more respectful of the corals. Dogs are also forbidden on all beaches.
It is strictly forbidden to collect shellfish, sea urchins, dead coral or any other natural element. Litter and cigarette butts must be systematically disposed of in a garbage can, and everyone is asked not to leave anything behind.
This report shows that, despite a few lapses, awareness is growing. The Agency would like to thank campers and remind them that the preservation of these natural areas is everyone's responsibility.
