EDF: Staff at the Power Plant in Crisis

“At Saint-Barthélemy, the power plant is facing a serious crisis—operational, social, and safety-related. ” On June 26, the CFDT “Chemicals and Energy” union distributed a flyer to warn of a gradual deterioration in working conditions and staff health. “For several weeks now, reports from the teams have been increasing and are alarming,” the document states. “Human resources are stretched to the limit, the organization is failing, working conditions have deteriorated, and the technical situation is cause for concern.” About ten sick leaves have been recorded over the past few months. These absences compound the problem of vacant positions.
An initial meeting between staff and management took place on June 17 in Saint-Barthélemy “amidst high tensions.” The situation was so tense that another meeting was held on June 30, this time in Guadeloupe with the human resources department. The union’s demands focused on implementing a rapid action plan to improve working conditions, immediately increasing staffing levels, and taking measures to secure the facilities.
According to the union, the meeting yielded concrete responses—both to address absences due to sick leave and to fill positions that remain vacant. Staff will therefore be dispatched from Guadeloupe and mainland France. Maintenance operations are also set to be stepped up. A return to a situation closer to “normal” is expected sometime in August.
