An opening night worthy of the finest evenings at the Wall House Museum. On Saturday, September 5, many island residents attended the opening of the fifth edition of the Artists’ Fair. A unique event, inspired by the eponymous exhibition created in Paris in 1880. This year, it brings together 39 artists from the island, each presenting one of their works: a photograph, a sculpture, or a work of graphic art. And what makes the Salon special is that it’s the visitors themselves who, by filling out a small slip of paper listing their favorite works, will select the winners in the three categories.
Throughout the evening, between sips of Champagne, guests at the Wall House wandered the aisles, voting slips in hand—often with genuine enthusiasm. “There are some truly beautiful pieces,” commented one visitor, almost surprised. Yet there are more artists living on the island than one might imagine. Some are professionals, but many others, though talented, remain amateurs—in the noblest sense of the word.
The Artists’ Exhibition is open through October 17. There’s plenty of time to vote, and the entire island is invited to come and cast their votes.
