The Conseil des Jeunes inaugurates their own book box in St-Jean

Thelma and Yeshna hesitate. Is it better to put the book on the right, on the left, or at the back? Well, the book box isn't short of space. Perhaps it would be more accurate to call it a book cupboard. Overhung by Alice in Wonderland's purple cat, the territorial youth council's book box was inaugurated on Tuesday September 24 at the Saint-Jean playground. Thelma, Yeshna and Ulysse, the initiators of the project, were quick to put the first books in the box. Together with Lili, who has since left the island, they make up the Youth Council's land-use planning committee. "Everyone can drop off books they don't read any more, and pick some up if they like," explains Thelma. This initiative complements the other bookboxes already present on the island. "We found that all the other book boxes on the island contained books for adults, but rarely for children, so we wanted to dedicate a place to them," explains Yeshna. The project was conceived during the 2023-2024 school year by these four schoolchildren, with the support of Pascale Minarro-Baudoin, elected member of the Action-Équilibre group. "They have a lot of ideas and inspirations, but sometimes you have to slow them down a bit," says the elected member. "I love the idea of getting young people involved in projects like this," agrees Yeshna. All that's left now is to fill the bookbox.
