Hurricane Melissa: aid organized in Saint Barth for affected countries

Jamaica's Prime Minister, Andrew Holmes, declared the island a "disaster zone" on Wednesday October 29. At the time of going to press, Hurricane Melissa, downgraded to category 3, was making landfall on the south coast of Cuba. Actions to help the population are currently underway in Saint Barth.

The Rotary Club and the Collectivité are working together to send "Shelter boxes" containing survival equipment such as tents, solar lamps and kitchen kits. These shipments will take place "as soon as we get the green light", explains Axelle Cappelli, President of the Rotary Club. "Aid will be put to the vote at the Executive Council meeting on Wednesday November 5," adds Xavier Lédée, President of the Collectivité.

The local delegation of the Red Cross is awaiting official communication from the association at international level to ascertain how to proceed. What's already certain is that we won't be appealing for donations in kind," says representative Christine Moizan. It's too complicated in terms of logistics and doesn't always correspond to the needs identified. "Financial donations are therefore more appropriate. The delegation is due to meet on Thursday October 30 to start thinking about local action.

The Lions Club plans to contact the Jamaican branch of its organization to find out what is needed. Donations can already be made by cheque, addressed to the "Lions Club de Saint Barthélémy". Checks can be deposited at P.O. Box 186, Gustavia, 97133 Saint Barthélémy.
